From Thessaloniki airport to Veria: every option

By the Akadimos Erasmus+ teamUpdated 19 October 20265 min read
The short answer

Veria is about 70 km west of Thessaloniki. The easiest public option is the airport bus 01X (01N at night) to the KTEL Makedonia bus station, then a KTEL Imathias bus to Veria: about 1 hour on the express, with up to 25 departures on weekdays. There are also a few trains a day from Thessaloniki, pre-booked transfers from about 125–135 € per car, and car hire at the airport.

Option 1: airport bus + intercity bus (best value)

  1. Airport → bus station. Take OASTH line 01X (01N at night) from Arrivals, in front of Exit 4 of Terminal 1, to the KTEL Makedonia bus station. Allow 45–60 minutes. The ticket costs 2 € and is sold at the booth or machines at the stop. On board, the machine takes coins only.
  2. Bus station → Veria. KTEL Imathias buses leave from lane 20. On weekdays there are up to 25 departures between 06:15 and 21:30, at weekends 16. The express takes about 1 hour, the route via Alexandreia about 1 hour 20 minutes.
  3. Arrival. Veria bus station is at Iras 28.
Timetables change. KTEL Imathias has a new timetable from 19 October 2026, and weekend times change again from 30 October 2026. Check ktelnimathias.gr or call +30 2310 595432 before you travel.

Option 2: train

Hellenic Train runs a few trains a day from Thessaloniki towards Edessa and Florina that stop at Veria. Times change during the year, so check the current timetable on hellenictrain.gr. The airport bus 01X also stops at Thessaloniki railway station.

Veria station is close to the centre, but it has no footbridge and is not wheelchair accessible. Check times and fares on hellenictrain.gr.

Option 3: pre-booked transfer

For groups, a pre-booked transfer is often the simplest choice. Online platforms list prices from about 123–136 € per car (up to 3–4 people) and about 148–178 € per minivan (up to 8 people), one way. Prices change, so compare when you book.

Option 4: hire a car

Car hire desks are in the Arrivals area. The drive takes you west on the motorway network (A1/A2). Tolls on Egnatia Odos are changing under the new operator; carry some cash or a card for toll plazas.

Our tips

  • Arriving late? 01N runs through the night, but the last KTEL bus to Veria leaves at about 21:30. Book a transfer or stay a night in Thessaloniki.
  • Travelling as a group of 3–4? A transfer can cost about the same per person as bus plus taxi, with less waiting.
  • Green travel in Erasmus+: if you come by train or bus all the way, you may be eligible for the higher green travel rate and extra travel days.
